The high incidence of grade 4 learners entering the grade with less than level 4 reading and comprehension ability in their home language is a significant cause of their inability to follow lessons in class. This can cause frustration and boredom leading to their playing up, disrupting the class and often resulting in their skipping school. Ultimately their education suffers, they do not perform well academically and often drop out of school. Thereafter, the chances of securing a well-paying job are unlikely and this often results in a life of poverty. 

Agang Sechaba Remedial Solutions is a volunteer organization founded in January 2023 and led by retired and experienced foundation educators in primary schools. This registered Non-Profit Organization seeks to remedy the high incidence of poor reading ability by providing free remedial teaching of grade 4 learners in their home language reading and comprehension.

The Agang Sechaba volunteers work alongside with grade 4 educators with the consent and support of the school head. At the beginning of the year the grade 4 learner’s identified with severe reading challenges are provided with a baseline assessment in order to verify the individual’s reading level and ability. The members then use a proven range of teaching aids, games and techniques to make the learning both easier and interesting for the learners. A range of concrete proven teaching aids to empower parents with basic reading approaches.

The learners are assessed at the end of each quarter and their program adjusted as they progress, either accelerating the learning challenges or offering additional interventions to help those that are struggling. The results show that a large majority of learners achieve grade 4 level and better in their home language reading and comprehension ability by the end of the program.

Agang Sechaba volunteers currently support 69 learners e.g. 38 from Khatlamping primary school and 31 from Bojelong primary school in Tembisa, there are ambitions to expand the program to include other indigenous languages and to extend their service to multiple primary schools in the area. The long-term ambition of Agang Sechaba is to extend the program to all primary schools in Gauteng.

To date, the volunteers have covered their own transport costs consisting of petrol purchases and taxi fares to and from the schools, and have not received any compensation for their time.

To continue consistently offering this essential remedial literacy program, the organization appeals to donors to assist with contributions to cover the monthly transport costs of the volunteers and for stationery as well as to cover learners remedial resources e.g. Work book, reader and the teachers guide.

The once-off and ongoing operation costs are as follows:

Once-off costs of R25 000.00

R12 500.00     Once-off costs for office equipment consisting of a laptop, MS Office Software and a multifunction laser printer.

R12 500.00     Once-off stationery costs consisting of A4 paper, Organization Stamp, Pencils, Pens, Flip Files, Plastic Pockets, Flip Chart Stands & Paper, whiteboard markers and Lazer Printer Cartridges.

Monthly Operating Costs of R28 200.00

R 2 500.00      Transport costs including petrol and taxi fares.

R 2 000.00      Stationery costs including A4 paper, pens, pencils, flip chart paper and whiteboard markers.

R 1 100.00      Administration costs including website hosting, internet data, and telephone costs.
